There are two kinds of shared gems, both are stored in your inventory. This will free up a space for the new one, and allow you to claim it. When you see MAX next to a Gem, like on the Big Apple in our picture, you can’t claim a shared Gem of the same type unless you harvest one and use it in a game first.

In our picture, the Big Apple is maxed out, so we can’t claim a shared Big Apple until we harvest one first and use it in a game. Look out for MAX beside any of your gems: If you’re maxed out, use one of your stored Gems in a game to free up a space for the new one.
