They are known for Undying Loyalty to the Starks, always citing the Starks' initial open-handedness to them as the reason, and are the only Seven-worshipping major House in the North, their exile having occurred after the Andal invasion.

There, they were taken under the protection of House Stark and given control of the Wolf's Den (the former seat of the extinct and rebellious House Greystark), eventually building the city of White Harbor and raising the New Castle as their seat. Originally a Southron House located in the Reach, several centuries ago the Manderlys were driven from their seat of Dunstonbury due to their growing wealth and power threatening House Gardener's rule and fled north.
